Myofascial Release (MFR)

John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release Approach is a whole body hands on technique used in the evaluation and treatment of the patient. This approach is different from other manual techniques such as massage, chiropractic, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, or cupping. Gentle pressure is applied and held for a minimum of 5 minutes in order to release the fascial restrictions. This is done without the use of lotions or creams in order to feel the fascial restrictions. Sometimes the body can have bracing patterns or trapped residual energy from past trauma that can be resulting in symptoms.  The goal of myofascial release is to increase space and mobility in order to restore balance within the body.

What is Fascia ?

Fascia is a continuous three dimensional web of connective tissue that extends from head to toe. Fascia surrounds every organ, muscle, nerve, bone, and blood vessel down to the cellular level and supports the body. Trauma (emotional or physical), inflammation, and repetitive poor postural postitions can cause fascia to become restricted. The binding down of the fascia can create abnormal pressure on pain sensitive structures resulting in pain, decreased mobility,  or dysfunction within the body. Since it is continuous, when one area is affected it impacts other parts of the body which can result in unrelated symptoms. Standardized tests including x-rays, MRIs, and CT scans do not show fascial restrictions which can make it difficult to diagnose.
